Wiener elections 2025: Numerous parties fight for votes - who prevails?
Drorygasse 19−23÷2÷2, 1030 Wien, Österreich - On February 28, 2025, the deadline for submitting declarations of support to participate in the Vienna municipal council and district representative elections, which will take place on April 27. Over 68 parties submitted the necessary election proposals for all 17 constituencies, including prominent names such as SPÖ, ÖVP, Greens, Neos, FPÖ and KPÖ, such as wien.gv.at reported. These parties have to make at least 100 support declarations for each election proposal, while they need 50 signatures for the district representatives that have to be submitted to this day.
bureaucratic hurdles for newcomers
The party of the work of Austria (PDA) also set off to compete in the districts of Landstrasse and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. The party needs a total of 300 declarations of support from citizens who are entitled to vote for their elections who live in these districts. By 1 p.m. today, all parties and the list of candidates have to submit their signatures to the electoral authority, according to Partidereid thesis.at . The levy takes place on site in the magistratic district offices, where the citizens have to submit their declarations of support.
It is a big challenge to mobilize support for new political forces. The bureaucratic effort is high: each explanation must be handed in personally and cannot be transmitted by email or online, which is tempted to assess the hurdles as intentionally high. An application for digitization has already been rejected in the Vienna state parliament, which further complicates the situation for smaller parties. During the declaration of support, citizens are only allowed to sign for one party to promote political competition-but which the PDA criticizes as an unnecessary impairment of democratic participation.
