Water pipe renewal in Alserbachstrasse: Traffic redirected from June 4!
With the beginning of the water pipe renewal on Alserbachstrasse on June 2, 2025, the city of Vienna takes another step to ensure sustainable securing of the water supply. This construction phase follows the start of the project in February 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2025. The current section of the work is accompanied by a temporary lock of Alserbachstrasse towards the city center, which will come into force from June 4, 2025. However, the road remains without restriction.
The traffic measures include a detour via Liechtensteinstrasse and Viriotgasse to Nußdorfer Straße as well as changes in traffic routing for bus line 40a and the Nachtbus N38. Some stops, including Berggasse, Bauernfeldplatz and Alserbachstrasse, are temporarily lifted, with replacement stops being set up. Access to Pfluggasse is only possible for operational and construction vehicles during work.
long -term perspectives of the Viennese water supply
This project is part of a comprehensive drinking water strategy that prepares Vienna for future water requirements. The strategy entitled "Wiener Wasser 2050" aims to adapt the water infrastructure to the growth of the population and the challenges of climate change. According to [wien.gv.at] (https://presse.wien.gv.at/2025/28/ludwig-czernohorszky-baustart-fuer-mega-project wien-hellen-groese-Groeschen-Schnelle-Schnelle-Haschellter) a third of the measures have been implemented.
An impressive undertaking in this context is the construction of the world's largest closed drinking water container, the construction of which took place in December 2024. After the planned expansion, this will be able to store around one billion liters of water, which corresponds to an increase in the storage column by 70 percent
additional infrastructure measures in the 19th district
At the same time, the construction work on the "3rd main line north" in Vienna goes into the next phase. This project, which started in 2020, aims at the expansion and renovation of water pipes and includes the laying of 2,300 meters of new water pipes in the 19th district. The associated costs amount to 15 million euros, and the work is to be completed by September 2023. Here, too, traffic measures are necessary, including temporary one -way regulations and locks.
The large number of current and planned hydraulic construction projects show the determination of the city of Vienna to ensure a reliable drinking water supply for the population and to react to the challenges of the future. With a planned increase in water requirements by 15 percent by 2050 and the effects of climate change, the expansion of the infrastructure remains a central challenge.
