Türkiye plans laws against LGBTI+: Threat to human rights?

Türkei - The Turkish government apparently plans to further strengthen the pressure on the LGBTI+ community with a new draft law. According to Krone this could have drastic consequences, especially for non-heterosexualized relationships. Men who wear nail polish or differ in any form from traditional gender roles could be punished in the future. The draft provides for prisoners of up to four years for couples who hold same -sex weddings or make “advertising” for homosexuality. In response to this, the opposition CHP politician Gökçe Gökçen described the draft law as a "threat to human rights" and warned of a potential criminalization of harmless acts.

stricter rules for gender adjustment

In addition to the measures described, the minimum age for sexual treatments in the new draft is increased from 18 to 21 years. In addition, those affected would have to demonstrate their infertility through I -specific medical certificates that are issued by state -recognized institutions. This is part of the government's efforts to protect the "Institution of the Family", whereby President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was proclaimed as a "year of the family", but only with regard to traditional family models.

The topic of gender identity is also the focus of the law, since the concept of the "biological gender" is to be included in the constitution. According to reports from Kaos Gl there is not only threatening punishments for couples who conduct same-sex engagements or weddings, but also for everyone who is publicly dealing with various gender identities. These developments are alarming because the pressure on the LGBTI+ community in Turkey has increased significantly in recent years. Events such as Pride parades are suppressed brutally, while the work of LGBTI+ organizations such as Kaos GL is made more difficult. The situation remains tense and the fate of the draft law is still uncertain.
