With the beginning of the 2024/25 ski season, the Red Cross Lungau took responsibility for the slopes rescue in the popular ski areas Aineck and Katschberg. As a result, six experienced paramedics are available that are used daily for the safety of winter sports enthusiasts. "The accidents are increasing, including those with a higher degree of injury," said Josef Bogensberger, owner of the sports railways. The increasing trend in the number of accidents is alarming: Last season, 438 accidents were documented in this ski area, of which 378 people were removed from medical care, as Daniel Pfeifenberger, one of the slopes, reports.

The "Snow Space Salzburg" ski area took an impressive balance in the 2022/23 winter season: around 1,400 operations of the slopes were registered. Thanks to a comprehensive rescue system that was developed in cooperation with the Red Cross, it is ensured that injured winter sports enthusiasts are supplied quickly and professionally. "On average, it only takes three minutes from the entrance to the emergency call until the first emergency services are on site in an accident," emphasizes the "Snow Space". The emergency calls are forwarded to the rescue center via central number 144, which takes over the coordination of all the required forces.

Ten percent of the injured winter athletes even have to be flown to surrounding hospitals by helicopter. The removal takes place under optimal conditions with specially equipped rescue skidoos, so that a timely and effective supply is guaranteed. Anton Holzer, state rescue commander, emphasizes: "This is how we guarantee a high quality of care on the ski slopes." The precise cooperation between slopes rescue and red cross is unique in Salzburg and crucial for security. Wolfgang Hettegger, chairman of the "Snow Space", adds: "A top infrastructure is a prerequisite for a first-class winter sports experience of our guests."
