Pastoral care in Salzburg: volunteers strengthen health care!

In the Archdiocese of Salzburg, over 50 volunteers are active alongside 33 full -time hospital chaplains and provide valuable support for the sick. These figures were recently announced in the run -up to the "World Day of the sick" on February 11th. Hospital pastoral care is an essential church offer that takes care of the psychosocial and spiritual care of the patients, often in cooperation with the Salzburg state clinics and the Tauernklinikum in Zell am See. The pastors convey comfort and support in difficult situations, be it with serious illnesses or the end of life. "It is crucial to be easy to support the fainting and pain of those affected," said Detlef Schwarz, the diocesan advocate for hospitality pastoral, in a current message. Kathpress also reported more about this.

intercession for nursing staff

In addition to these support offers, Detlef Schwarz, also a speaker for medical pastoral, has formulated an intercession in order to help nurses in the current difficult situation during the covid-19 pandemic and the associated intensive care shortage. In the service services, these prayers are spoken in order to give the nursing staff strength, courage and love so that they can fulfill their service despite high loads with joy and prudence. "The care of women and men in care applies to everyone," emphasizes Schwarz. A central aspect of this intercession is the request of inner strength and relief for the suffering, as well as support against the constant fear of being able to make mistakes or to become ill, which illustrates the emotional and physical challenges of nursing work, as EDS reported.

The pastoral work and the intercessed intercession are in the context of the Holy Year 2025, in which Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of service to the suffering. "Your common path is a sign for everyone, a praise for human dignity and a song of hope," said the Pope and encouraged everyone to work tirelessly in the works of mercy. This symbolizes the essential role that the service of the patient takes in, which includes both pastoral and nursing work.
