Ludwig starts election campaign: Vienna defies crises with future projects!

Wien, Österreich - The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) recently initiated the intensive election campaign with an urgent speech by Mayor Michael Ludwig. At the event, Ludwig underlined that the current surveys are significantly behind the results of five years ago, which underlines the urgency of effective measures. He also drew a positive balance of the past legislative period, even if not all plans could be successfully implemented. Realized projects include important progress in labor market policy, security, environmental protection and housing.

Ludwig particularly emphasized the introduction of a new free consecration day school and measures to secure the care system. He described the current framework conditions as "difficult" due to the corona apandemy, the Russian attack war on Ukraine, the energy crisis, the inflation and an impending recession.

accept challenges

During the speech, Ludwig represented the domestic policy situation as challenging. He criticized the lack of a gas price and rental price brake by the federal government, which benefited right-wing populist parties. Despite these challenges, he emphasized the importance of keeping a "cool head" course. In the city of Vienna, rents have remained stable, which demonstrates the performance of the city, for example through projects in flood protection.

Ludwig wies auch darauf hin, dass Wien im vergangenen Jahr das einzige Bundesland war, das ein Wirtschaftswachstum verzeichnen konnte. A future-oriented project is the conversion of the Otto Wagner area into a university campus for the music and art of private university of the city of Vienna (MUK). The pavilions on the area are to be adapted for music, dance and singing. Despite the efforts to establish Central European University (CEU), which ultimately did not take place, Ludwig sees the new cultural center as one of the great future visions of the upcoming legislative period.

claims to the BUND

Another concern of Ludwig’s is the review and reduction of economic barriers for citizenships. Many people in nursing or cleaning professions face the challenge that they often do not get a chance of citizenship because the prescribed minimum income is unreachable. The SPÖ wants to tackle these social issues more in the coming months.

In the economic context, however, a difficult situation for 2025 is forecast. Austria could achieve modest growth of 0.6 to 0.7 percent after two years of recession, according to the analyzes. In comparison, the euro zone with 1.3 percent and the United States can even show much faster growth with 2.4 percent. Current problems such as increasing unemployment, high public debt and dein industrialization are pushing for a reform.

economists require consolidation of the budget and reducing bureaucracy, while the high tax burden on work is identified as a central inhibitability for competitiveness. Georg Knill, President of the Industry Association, and Walter Pudschedl from Bank Austria also emphasize the need for courageous reforms by a new, determined government.

The path to a more stable economic environment could pave up due to falling inflation numbers, which in turn would offer the possibility of interest rate reductions. An United Government could strengthen trust and enliven domestic demand.

The upcoming campaigns will not only decide on the direction of the SPÖ, but are also characterized by a challenging economic environment that requires targeted and courageous measures to secure the future of Austria.
