Art in the heart of Vienna: Marinella Senatore celebrates community and protest

Am Graben in Vienna is opened by the new exhibition by Marinella Senatore, which can be seen under the title "I Contain Multitudes" from May 14 to November 3, 2025. The renumaged artist, born in 1977 in Cava de ’Tirreni, Italy, brings her multidisciplinary skills that include music, visual art and film, into the“ Protest Forms ”project. Here she shows five large banner who turn dynamically on colored flagpoles in the wind.

The installation refers to traditional banners and flags, which are often used in religious moves and social protest movements. The elements of these works of art include collage-like image and font elements, which are designed as applications and embroidery. The texts come from local women's groups and address the strength of the community.

Community projects and local votes

The committed cooperation with the women's education and community center "Piramidops" and the intersectional association "Black Women Community" is central. Marinella Senatore has selected quotes from the suggestions of these groups and combines them with materials from other projects to establish a thematic connection that celebrates solidarity and polyphony in society.

Veronica Kaup-Hasler, City Councilor for Culture and Science, emphasizes the importance of work and emphasizes that such participatory art projects address people directly and promote cultural participation. This is in accordance with a broader trend in contemporary art, which has been observed since the 1960s and 1970s, as art forms such as land art and public art established public space as a platform for dialogue and reflection.

art as social practice

Marinella Senatore has participated in participatory projects at over 24 international locations with more than 8 million participants. Her work was made in renowned institutions such as the Palazzo Grassi in Venedig and the Center Pompidou exhibited in Paris. This range shows how art can achieve people in public spaces who otherwise hardly come into contact with artistic work.

The projects are focused on focusing on social issues and initiating a direct dialogue with the population. Examples of similar initiatives are border poetry and the works of artists such as Daniel Dancer, who deal with ecological and social issues through their actions and invite the community for active participation.

The initiative of Kör Vienna, which has been promoting contemporary art in public space since 2004, also underlines the importance of cultural educational processes and access to art for everyone. Marinella Senatores work in Vienna is not only an expression of artistic creativity, but also an important step towards social participation and reflection.
