The future of European agriculture faces decisive changes. In a meeting of the European Agriculture Committee of the European Parliament, EU agricultural commissioner Christophe Hansen made it clear that new measures to strengthen farmers are on the way. At the center of the discussion is the creation of fair competitive conditions and the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles for rural family businesses. Agricultural spokesman Alexander Bernhuber emphasizes the need for easier rules in order to give farmers more time to work on the farm. "Our companies do not need promises, but quick and noticeable relief," said Bernhuber, stating that the adjustments are not only important for the actors in agriculture, but also for the quality of food supply.

Hansen announced that two central legislative initiatives should be specified before the summer. These initiatives aim to combat unfair trade practices and to improve the negotiating position of farmers in the value chain. Bernhuber emphasizes how important it is that existing structures, especially cooperatives, are not burdened by excessive new regulations. "Cooperatives play a crucial role in milk production," he explained.
Another aspect of the reform is the stricter enforcement of rules against unfair trading practices, which are currently being treated inconsistently in the Member States. Bernhuber calls for consistent implementation so that farmers and small suppliers are better protected from unfair conditions. "It is not enough to have fair rules - they also have to be controlled all over Europe," said Bernhuber. While the EU vision for strengthening the agricultural sector has already begun, further reforms have been planned.
