Deolinda: A new look at life after your eye surgery!
A crucial moment for the two -year -old Deolinda in Mozambique took place on April 29, 2024 when, thanks to the non -profit organization, she received light for the world the vital eye surgery that saved her from staying blind in one eye. Deolinda was born with gray star, an eye disease that has to be treated quickly in children so that they can learn to see. If necessary interventions are done too late, vision and brain development can have a negative impact - the time window usually closes up to the age of eighth. Herminia Cumbe, Deolinda's mother, is overjoyed: "I am so relieved that Deolinda finally got the operation. I wish that she grows up as a healthy child," she expressed her gratitude.
a long way to hope
The history of the operation was not without challenges. Herminia already noticed a white spot on Deolinda's pupil at the age of five months, which indicated a gray star, but was initially inadequate and rejected the operation. It was only when she visited the hospital that she needed the urgent information she needed. But the way to the operation was paved with disappointments: planned surgical appointments had to be moved several times due to emergencies, since the eye department in Maputo does not have its own operating room and has to share it with the emergency room. Dr. Lacea Alfredo, the treating doctor, emphasized the urgency of the intervention to give Deolinda the chance to see the world despite her illness.
Finally,, on the fourth attempt, everything went according to plan. After the successful operation, Deolinda recovers and will wear glasses in the coming months, while a suitable lens will be used later. The organization of light for the world is tirelessly committed to improving eye medical care on site, for example through the training of specialist staff and building up your own operating room in the Central Hospital in Maputo. This is particularly important because the current global crisis endangers the funding for health projects. Support the work of light for the world and thus also children like Deolinda who earn a chance of a normal life, as reported to
