Mayoral duel in Nenzing: Who will win the decisive runoff election?
On election Sunday, March 16th in Nenzing, there was an exciting head-to-head race in the mayoral election. Michael Hartmann from the “We for Nenzing” list received 49.68 percent of the votes, while his competitor Cornelia Spiß from the FPÖ received 37.7 percent. These results meant that Hartmann had to go into the runoff election, as the FPÖ, which had been in power in Nenzing for decades, was voted out in both the direct mayoral election and the municipal council election ORF Vorarlberg reported. Spiß commented on the election defeats and cited several factors that could have contributed, including unexpected changes within the community.
In the meantime, the effectiveness of the municipal election was challenged. Johannes Schallert, the SPÖ's top candidate, announced the challenge to the Constitutional Court. Hartmann, who responded positively to feedback from the community, explained that the decision was now in the hands of the judiciary. In a TV duel on Friday, the two candidates discussed central issues such as the school location issue and the community's planned projects. Hartmann and Spiß agree that the elementary school should remain at its current location, which justifies the funds already invested in the renovation.
New umbrella organization of agricultural communities
Meanwhile, the 30 agricultural communities in Vorarlberg have come together to form an umbrella organization to make their important work in the management and care of the forests and Alps visible. These communities not only ensure timber harvesting, but also help protect wildlife habitats and drinking water resources. Birgitt Ehe, chairwoman of the Röns agricultural community, explained: “The work often only becomes visible in future generations.” Mathias Whirlpool, chairman of the Innerbraz agricultural community, emphasized that more information and education should create a better understanding of the work of agricultural communities in order to enable future generations to enjoy intact nature MyDistrict reported.
The increasingly noticeable fusion of political and environmental issues in Nenzing shows how closely the community's challenges are linked to the achievements of the agricultural communities. These structures play an essential role in maintaining natural landscapes, which is particularly important in times of change.
