BLG in Bremen is planning job cuts: the crisis in the auto industry hits!

The automotive industry in Germany is in the middle of a crisis, and this is now having a concrete impact on BLG Logistics in Bremen. The company plans to cut jobs in the auto parts logistics sector, as a spokeswoman confirmed to buten un internal. However, she was unable to disclose the exact number of positions affected. The affected employees in Bremen are severely affected by the current slump in sales, which, according to BLG, means that the market cannot be expected to recover in the foreseeable future.

In the BLG logistics center C3, where around 500 employees were recently employed, there is a lack of enough orders, especially in the so-called CKD business (Completely Knocked Down), which includes the supply of the Mercedes overseas plants. Matthias Magnor, the new CEO of the logistics group, commented on the challenges to the Weser-Kurier: “If the work is not there, we are required to adapt the teams accordingly,” said Magnor. In order to find a socially acceptable solution for those affected, BLG is holding discussions with the works council and examining options such as voluntary resignation or transfers to other locations, such as general cargo handling in Neustädter Hafen.

New perspectives and challenges

Amid these challenges, BLG is also considering positive plans. The construction of an inland terminal for automotive logistics is planned for spring 2025 at the new automobile location in the Ahlhorner Heide. Around 200 new jobs are to be created here on an area of around 35 hectares, which could be a ray of hope in the difficult situation. According to BLG, the crisis in the automotive industry was less noticeable at the Bremerhaven car terminal, but here too there was a 16 percent decline in car throughput in the first nine months.

The Verdi union is calling for early and comprehensive involvement in discussions about job cuts. In view of the challenges arising from the transformation and the sales crisis, she appeals to the social responsibility of employers in order to ensure a socially acceptable reduction in jobs, as was also reported in the Weser-Kurier.
