Bremen becomes a Street Art City” - a new cultural experience unfolds!
Bremen, Deutschland - Bremen was officially recognized as a “Street Art City” in November 2024. With this award, the city is now part of the "Street Art Cities" app, which offers an interactive card with over 250 graffiti works of art. The application shows both historical murals and modern Murals and informs users about the respective artists and their stories. Kristina Vogt, Senator for Economics, Häfen and Transformation, and Oliver Rau, Managing Director of WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH, expressed pleasure about this award.
The Bremen cultural scene is known for its diversity, which includes established institutions as well as alternative art forms such as Street Art. An early, important work is the mural "Grandma and Grandpa - View from the window" by Peter KF Krueger from 1975. Current highlights of Street Art in Bremen include the Murals on the high bunker in Walle and works by Markus Genesius, which is active under the pseudonym Wow123. The "Street Art Cities" app enables users to create their own routes to the works of art and offers references to popular districts in which Street Art is located, including Walle, Findorff and the "Quarter".
Interactive app and tourist support
The app offers various routes, such as the "Urban Minimalism" tour with a length of 14 km and the "Lucky Walls City Route", which includes 8.8 km. Michael Kahrs from WFB emphasizes how important working with local artists for the comprehensive representation of Bremen in the app. This platform connects Bremen with over 1700 cities worldwide and includes around 65,000 works of art and 120,000 active users. The visibility of the works of art is increased by the use of this app, which should also boost tourism and strengthen local districts.
Local artists such as Peter Stöcker and Tobias Kroeger recognize the potential of the app to enable broader access and address the younger generation. Katharina Rosen offers street art tours and sees advantages in this development for both locals and tourists. The "Street Art Cities" app is available free of charge for iOS and Android.
Markus Genesius, also known as Wow123, is an important player in the German graffiti and street art scene and lives in Bremen. He has been active internationally in the art and graffiti scene for over three decades. His work includes pictures on facades, canvases, sketches on paper as well as objects and sculptures. In his work, Genesius combines angular color areas with tags, bombings and stencils and continuously develops its distinctive style. He often brings the historical television test picture as the starting point of his works and is firmly anchored in contemporary art, as shown on the Affenfaust Galerie .
The official recognition of Bremen as a "Street Art City" offers a new platform for the presentation of the creative diversity of the city and invites both residents and visitors to explore the impressive works of art as well Magazine described.
