NATO boss Rutte speaks plainly about Selenskyj: Red Line reached!
Odessa, Ukraine - On April 16, 2025, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte surprised with a visit to the South Ukrainian port city of Odessa, where he met President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. During the meeting, Rutte condemned the attacks of the Russian army to civilians as "outrageous" and "terrible". In view of the current situation, Rutte also spoke about the challenges of the negotiations on ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict initiated by US President Donald Trump.
In this context,Selenskyj warned that US negotiators should not make any inadmissible concessions regarding the areas occupied by Russia. He made it clear that all territories belong to Ukraine and that only the Ukrainian people could decide on their territory. He described the recognition of the occupied areas as Russian as a "red line" for Ukraine.
Current developments in the Ukraine conflict
Since the annexation of the Crimea in 2014,Russia had also declared Luhansk, Donetsk, Cherson and Saporischschja as part of his state. Despite these annexions, Russia only completely controls the Crimea. According to Sergej Naryschkin, the head of the Russian foreign intelligence service, Kyiv has to do without these territories. In a current Russian rocket attack on the city of Sumy, 34 people were recently killed and 117 injured, including children.
In the past few days there have been drone attacks on Ukraine, especially on Odessa. Three people were injured in the port city, while in other cities there was air alarm. In general, the extent of the attacks is still unclear, which also tightens the tense situation in the region.
demands for support for Ukraine
During the meeting, Selenskyj emphasized the urgent need for further support for Ukraine, especially in the form of air defense systems and rockets. He called for quick progress in the formation of an international group that could secure a possible ceasefire. This support is particularly relevant according to the latest difficult attacks.NATO countries such as Great Britain and France are already working on a basis for a security quota in Ukraine. However, the US position is also important. According to reports, the United States does not want to support a G7 resolution regarding the attacks on Sumy, since the Trump government relies on negotiations with Russia.
Selenskyj also asked Trump to visit Ukraine in order to get an idea of the destruction of the Russian attacks. Trump’s allegations towards the bidges and against Selenskyj, not preventing it from escalating the war, also illustrate political complexity with regard to the negotiations.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense, and the conversations about a possible ceasefire as well as military and humanitarian support will continue to be of great importance.
