In the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation is spoiling itself after the M23 rebels have taken the strategically important city of Goma. This conquest came in the middle of violent battles between the M23 and the Congolese government troops, which are supported by various militias. The unrest meant that at least 2,900 people died and hundreds of thousands fled from their houses, as the international reactions and summit meetings

In order to counter the escalating conflict, an extraordinary summit of the East African community (EAC) and the solidarity community of southern Africa (SADC) were convened in Tanzania. During the summit, it was emphasized that a strategy concept to contain the hostility should be developed within five days. There are plans for the reopening of the Goma Airport and for security protection measures in the region, as can be seen from the results of the meeting, as the BBC reported. Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi virtually participated, while his Rwandian counterpart Paul Kagame was personally present. Tshisekedi accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23, which he justifies with the protection of its national security.

The M23 has already recorded significant regional gains and is apparently planning to continue expanding to South Kivu. Goma itself shows the traces of violence - reports on civilians who have been wounded in chaos are piling up. Eyewitnesses report chaotic scenes in hospitals that are flooded by the injured. Doctors are desperately fighting over the overload, while the rebels in the streets of the city take control and occupy numerous state institutions.
