Successful certificate handover: Volunteers trained for end-of-life care!
On the first weekend of December 2024, 14 participants successfully completed the course “Enabling for end-of-life care” at the Hospice Association Altenkirchen e.V. This course provided participants with comprehensive knowledge of the dying process as well as the needs of dying people and their relatives. A key focus was on training in a hospice attitude that emphasizes respect, dignity and the desire for a self-determined life until the end of life.
Special experiences during the course included dealing with loss and visiting the funeral home. The participants experienced a strong connection within the group through conversations, reflections and exercises. One participant said that she had learned how to accompany others and how they themselves can deal with their fears and feelings. The course leader emphasized the importance of listening and appreciatively accompanying people.
Course offerings and volunteer work
When the certificate was presented, the graduates were encouraged to use their knowledge for the benefit of others. They are strengthened in their voluntary work, which is an important pillar of hospice work. The Hospice Association Altenkirchen e.V. is actively involved in helping people in serious illness situations and at the end of life by offering support for the dying and their families during the time of saying goodbye. The tasks of the volunteers include being present, accompanying, empathizing, having conversations and living in community.
The hospice association's volunteers are supported by full-time employees and receive regular supervision. The hospice and palliative counseling service is currently looking for reinforcements for its team. Anyone interested can register for the next course in February by calling 02681-9837514; there are still a few places available. Further information about the course content and volunteer work in the hospice association can be found on the Altenkirchen hospice association website hospizverein-ak.de reported.
