AI in class: Revolution at the Veldenzgymnasium Lauterecken!
Lauterecken, Deutschland - At the Veldenzgymnasium Lauterecken, artificial intelligence (AI) has been offered as a new subject since this school year. The students not only learn the basics of AI, but also to deal with programs such as chatt. Headmaster Stefan Weber is of the opinion that the use of AI in the education sector has become indispensable. He emphasizes that the teachers' competencies should be used to bring the students closer to the use of AI. "Nothing works without AI," he explains, and the teachers quickly developed a curriculum with school and parents' representatives that covers a wide range of technical possibilities to ethical questions. Weber sees a special challenge in clarifying fake news and the risks of chatbots that are becoming more and more present at school. According to a report by SWR AI expert Lisa Häßel, partly interactively designed so that students program their own chatbots.
The feedback from the students is positive. Finn, a 14-year-old, reports: "I didn't really understand how chat bots work and how they know everything from." Vanessa, an eighth grader, also appreciates the new teaching method: "It helps me to learn." The children use AI under the aspect of solving problems instead of just looking for solutions. Last but not least, the school is proud that AI is not graded in class, which takes the pressure from the students, as the teacher Häßel explains. However, she is aware that independent learning and practice cannot be completely replaced by AI, and at the beginning it was skeptical how the students would deal with the new subject without grades. But the enthusiasm of the students convinces them. A comprehensive examination of AI could therefore not only revolutionize learning, but also shape the teaching methods in the future, report
