First mini forest in Floridsdorf: A green project for the future

In Vienna-Floridsdorf, a new “mini-forest” on Jedlersdorfer Strasse was recently planted. This campaign is part of the "Wiener Wäldchen" initiative, which was launched in 2022 to make the city greener and more alive in times of climate change. With over 20 different types of tree and shrub, forester of the city together with students have greened an area of 300 square meters.

Such a "Viennese Wäldchen" is a small, dense forest area that was specially developed for heavily populated areas. It measures at least 100 square meters and is very quickly growing, which makes it ideal for urban environments. "We create green oases that not only cool down the environment, but also offer life for numerous domestic plants and animals," said climate councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky.

The contribution to urban ecology

These mini forests, which are approximately the size of a tennis court, are more than just shady places. With the evaporation cooling, they help to lower the temperatures around them. "The dense planting promotes the growth of plants and offers ideal habitat for insects and birds," says forest director Andreas Januskovecz.

The first of these forests was planted in the 5th district in Stefan-Weber-Park. With the current planting, there are now a total of nine such forest in Vienna, a tenth should follow in November in the 1st district. The district leader Georg Papai said positively about the project: "The trees are not only an enrichment for the environment, but also promote understanding of nature and climate protection from an early age."

The project is carried out in cooperation with several institutions, including the magistrate's directorate and the departments for city gardens and environmental protection. School children and residents will also be actively involved in the planting actions in the future in order to convey a feeling for nature and its importance.
