Sustainable construction: New ward building at Vienna General Hospital is taking shape

A new ward building is currently being built in the south of the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), which will be equipped with the latest technology. A notable component of this construction project are the bed wards, which are constructed using wooden modules. This innovative methodology is already in full swing, with the individual modules currently being delivered and installed in the city.

The building will cover an area of around 4,000 square meters and offer space for a total of 88 beds in 46 rooms as well as 45 therapy rooms and 44 other functional support rooms. One of the special features of this construction: All modules were completed in advance in Trofaiach, Styria, including all necessary technical facilities such as heating, air conditioning and plumbing. The transport to Vienna was a precise logistical masterpiece, as various construction sites and traffic bottlenecks had to be taken into account during delivery.

Advantages of the construction

The decision to use wooden modular construction brings with it a number of advantages, explains Herwig Wetzlinger, director of the AKH Vienna University Hospital. “The construction method enables a very short construction period for the new station building, while at the same time guaranteeing a high level of longevity and promoting sustainable construction.” Given the circumstances, each of the 32 square meter modules will be assembled and secured on site.

Since the new station building cannot accommodate all types of stations, the AKH attaches great importance to the selection of functionalities. Operational units are not housed in this part of the building because the necessary infrastructural conditions are not available. Construction is progressing according to plan and if everything goes as planned, the positioning of the last of the 112 modules should be completed by October.

The construction project shows how the AKH is modernizing itself and focusing on sustainable construction methods. Almost every detail was taken into account in the planning to ensure efficient and quick implementation.
