Train stations and schools affected: Investigations after bomb threats in Austria

In a worrying incident that attracted the attention of the authorities in Austria and Switzerland, the St. Gallen public prosecutor's office initiated a procedure against a 20-year-old Schwizer. This is done according to a heavy series of bomb threats that have been pronounced against various facilities in Austria since September 30th

The suspect was arrested in Switzerland in mid -October, but released again a little later. According to the spokeswoman for the Linz public prosecutor, Ulrike Breiteneder, the investigation in Austria continues to run in parallel to extensively clarify the incident. The threats were mainly transmitted via email, while train stations, schools and shopping centers in Austria were particularly affected, including Bregenz and Feldkirch in Vorarlberg.

anonymous bomb threats - an alarming pattern

A total of 27 anonymous bomb threats have been recorded throughout Austria. As a result of these threats, the affected institutions were forced to take measures, including evacuation to ensure the safety of visitors. The investigators are now focusing on illuminating the background of these threats and determining the corresponding perpetrators.

In addition, Breiteneder made it clear that a domestic procedure in Switzerland was opened with regard to Austrian cases. The ensured electronic devices, which were confiscated during the investigation, are also evaluated. In October, the Graz public prosecutor's office had already sent a request to prosecution to the Swiss authorities.

difficulties in delivery of the suspect

Another complication represents that due to his Swiss citizenship, the suspect cannot be delivered to Austria for prosecution, unless he would agree to that - which has not yet happened. The responsible investigative authorities in both countries remain in constant exchange in order to coordinate the courses of both procedures in the best possible way. Breiteneder noted that the parallel investigation makes sense to avoid legal difficulties and to lead the two procedures efficiently.

The spokeswoman for the St. Gallen public prosecutor, Daniela Dobler, also confirmed that the evaluation of the electronic devices is still running and the results are sent to the public prosecutor Linz after the legal assistance procedure has been completed. The situation remains tense and the authorities are trying to collect conclusive evidence in order to ensure security in the region and to hold the responsible persons for accounting.
