School reforms challenged: Austria's educational system in change!

These show a significant decline in competencies among students, although Austria lies in mathematics above the OECD average. New mobile phone ban and plans for school reforms

In a further step, the government plans to introduce a mobile phone ban for students from the first eight school levels. This was announced by Education Minister Christoph Return (NEOS) in a press conference to strengthen the directors in their skills. The proposal, which has already been implemented in some federal states, aims to reduce distractions in class, which is now recognized as a necessity.

Looking back at his term, Polaschek emphasized that many decisions were made in close coordination with experts during pandemic. Now he returns to the Karl Franzens University of Graz after announcing that he no longer continued to work as a minister. The skepticism of scientific knowledge in the political landscape, especially within the FPÖ, influenced his decision. Polaschek promised to continue to work for equal opportunities and educational reforms based on the results of educational research in order to meet the different requirements of the education system.
