Large exercise in St. Radegund: Rescue workers are preparing for a fire emergency

On the evening of October 3, a comprehensive exercise of the Red Cross Graz-Umgebung and the volunteer fire brigades St. Radegund and Rinnegg took place in St. Radegund. The aim of this major exercise was to prepare the emergency services for a potential major fire. The scenario was simulated in a rehabilitation center located at the foot of the Schöckl and 150 beds for the rehabilitation of cardiovascular diseases.

The exercise focused on a scenario in which a fire was triggered by an exploded smartphone battery on the fourth floor of the five-story building. As a result, numerous rehabilitation patients were injured and had to be evacuated. In order to make the exercise as realistic as possible, the participants and nursing staff were informed and made up shortly before the start of essential details to simulate real -acting injuries.

In the exercise, the emergency services present tested their processes in the event of an emergency. The Red Cross used a large team that was staggered. Overall, nine ambulances, a command vehicle for the operations management, an emergency doctor and employees were used concentrated from the region's crisis intervention team and additional support from the medical assistant. This extensive use was necessary to consider the large number of fictitiously injured people in the simulation.

The exercise was a valuable experience for everyone involved and helps to optimize the preparation for actual emergencies. Regular exercises in institutions of this kind are crucial to ensure the safety of patients and staff, and prove the commitment of the emergency services to be able to act quickly and effectively in an emergency.
