Refurbishment and expansion of the Bafep St. Pölten: 36.5 million for the future!
St. Pölten, Österreich - The Federal Education Institute for Social Pedagogy and Elementary Pedagogy (Bafep/Basop) in St. Pölten is being renovated and expanded. The total volume of the construction project is around 36.5 million euros. This significant investment is financed by the federal government and handled by the state of Lower Austria. Construction is scheduled for the winter of 2025, the construction period is expected to be two years. The aim of the renovation is to cover the urgent need for training positions in pedagogy, which was created due to the structural state of the existing systems and the growing demand.
The school company has been provisionally organized in container systems since the school year 2023/24. In the future, 620 students and around 150 kindergarten and after-school children should learn under one roof with the new building. In addition, around 100 teachers will benefit from the current container and exposite solutions.
meaning of the investment
Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner emphasized the relevance of the investment for the training of educators. Minister of Education Christoph Return emphasizes the need to train more specialists in the field of elementary pedagogy. In addition, State Councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister explains that the new framework conditions will create good prerequisites for modern and needs-based training through the renovation and expansion.
training for the future
The BAFEP has developed since its renaming in 2016 by educational institutions for kindergarten education (BAKIP) into a recognized training center for elementary pedagogy and social pedagogy. The facilities offer comprehensive education, specialist knowledge and skills for education in kindergartens as well as for social pedagogical tasks in after -school care and homes. Educational institutions for social pedagogy (basop) meet the requirements of all employers in Austria and are therefore the only recognized training in this area.
In addition, Education Minister Christoph Return has presented a training initiative for elementary pedagogy, which includes over 32 million euros. This is to create more than 4,000 additional training positions in the next four years. A new degree and a pilot project at the University of Graz are intended to help win more specialists for these important tasks. An additional need of 13,700 specialists will be determined by 2030 to maintain the status quo. However, the Greens express doubts as to whether the necessary training positions can be realized and require an improvement in working conditions in kindergartens and other pedagogical institutions. Through broader offers, such as "Distance Learning", training courses close to home should be realized in order to meet the need for specialists.
Overall, this extensive investment and training program shows a clear direction: The training of elementary educators should be approved and adapted to the increasing requirements.
