New Salzburg Housing Promotion Act: Knowledge of German for third -country nationals from 2025

The Salzburg Housing Funding Act recently presented Governor Wilfried Haslauer, deputy governor Marlene Svazek and State Councilor Martin Zauner. A significant change affects the allocation of funded rental apartments to third -country nationals. From the coming year, these must also provide evidence of knowledge of German in addition to other requirements.

The new legislative package enables the application for housing subsidies for Austrian citizens and EU citizens. The entitlement to funding results in both rent and ownership based on household size and the maximum net household income. Third -country nationals must meet certain requirements in order to be considered for a funded rental apartment. Here is an overview:

  • have been registered with the main residence in Austria for at least five years.
  • have worked liable to social security, either 24 months in five years or 60 months with longer stay.
  • provide proof of knowledge of German at least A2 level.

Governor Deputy Marlene Svazek underlines the importance of German requirements in the housing subsidy for third-country nationals and emphasizes that integration in Austria should continue to be promoted.

State Councilor Martin Zauner is convinced that the new law meets the needs of Salzburg. It is a comprehensive package for affordable living that not only affects residential building funding, but also spatial order and building law laws to reduce construction costs.

The exact details of the new award criteria of the housing subsidy can be found on the website of the State of Salzburg.
