Social Hair Day: A haircut for 80 needy Styrians
The “Social Hair Day” took place in the city of Steyr on October 14th, an initiative by Streetwork Steyr that was successfully launched last year. The aim of the event is to offer people in need a special service. This year the number of participants was increased to an impressive 80 people, which clearly shows the satisfaction of the organizers and the participating hairdressers.
The campaign was realized with the support of three hairdressing salons. In addition to the well-known establishments “My Love Hair” and “The Magicians”, the “Hairstories” team also took part in the event. A total of 15 hairdressers volunteered their time and expertise to offer those in need a service with a total value of around 5,000 euros.
Distribution of vouchers to social institutions
In order to provide help specifically to those who really need it, vouchers were distributed in advance to various social institutions in Steyr via the “Flow Akut” network. These include, among other things, the emergency shelter, street work, X-Dream and child and youth welfare. These organizations gave the vouchers to people in need.
The opportunity to have their hair or beard cut free of charge was gratefully accepted by participants. It was a day on which the affected people not only had their hair done, but also experienced a feeling of appreciation and attention. A hairdresser emphasized: “It is important that everyone feels comfortable and can be seen.” One guest described his experience and said: "I don't usually go to the hairdresser because I'm ashamed of the way I look. But on this day they're only opening for us."
The organizers are already planning the next edition of “Social Hair Day”, which will take place again on October 13th next year. Hairdressers who are interested in taking part in this special campaign can contact Astrid Immler from Streetwork Steyr directly on 0660 6312027. Such initiatives show how much positive impact can be achieved through collaboration and volunteer work in the community.
