New digital signal box in Traun: modernization of the Pyhrn line started

In a significant measure to improve the railway infrastructure, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) put the new electronic signal boxes in Traun and Nettingsdorf into operation on November 4th. These innovative systems are the result of a huge investment of 28.8 million euros and are designed to significantly increase safety and efficiency on the Pyhrn route.

The new digital signal boxes replace the previous models, which are around 40 years old. They are now centralizing the control of all signals and switches in the modern operations management center in Linz. This change enables automated processes that are more precise and effective. One of the biggest improvements is that passengers are now able to track arrivals and departures in real time. This should significantly increase the punctuality of trains and thus ensure more comfort when traveling.

Construction work and rail replacement transport

However, the commissioning of the new signal boxes also entails some renovation work. The Pyhrn line will remain closed until the new technology is implemented, which means that there will be temporary restrictions on train traffic. In order to ensure passenger mobility during this phase, ÖBB has set up a rail replacement service. This includes bus connections for local trains on the S4 line between Linz-Wegscheid and Kirchdorf an der Krems as well as replacement services for long-distance trains from Linz main station to Kirchdorf.

The changes are intended not only to increase the safety of rail operations, but also to improve the economic efficiency of the ÖBB. Despite the temporary disruptions, passengers are looking forward to the upcoming improvements that promise a more reliable and pleasant travel experience.
