Train accident in Upper Austria: child seriously injured at railway crossing!

A tragic incident occurred in Upper Austria on June 5, 2025: a small child of kindergarten age was hit by a train at an unguarded level crossing in Ottensheim. The child's condition is critical. Due to the severity of the injuries, it had to be flown to the Linz University Hospital in a rescue helicopter. This incident comes just three days after another train accident in Eferding in which a six-year-old was killed. A Red Cross spokesman confirmed the little victim's critical condition and the situation is of great concern.

The incident in Ottensheim is not the only train accident that occurred this Monday morning. In Upper Austria, a pedestrian was hit by a regional train. The man also fell under the train on an unguarded level crossing on Unterbrunninger Straße. He suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Salzburg hospital after receiving emergency medical care on site from a team of doctors from Braunau.

Multiple accidents in one day

In addition to these tragic events, there was another incident in the Tulln district in which a freight train collided with an excavator. The accident occurred between the Kritzendorf and St. Andrä-Wördern train stations. Although there were no injuries, the railcar and the first two wagons derailed, resulting in significant property damage.

After these accidents, replacement rail services were set up, and the L 118 road also had to be closed until the afternoon due to the rescue work. Although the railway is one of the safer means of transport, accidents like the current ones cannot be ruled out.

Background and historical perspective

The list of railway accidents in Austria shows that serious incidents occur again and again, which often result in loss of life or significant damage. Most accidents affect Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) trains. Despite the introduction of safety measures such as the Indusi train control system, which was introduced in Austria in 1963, accidents continue to occur.

A dangerous trend in recent years shows that accidents at unguarded level crossings are a recurring problem. This raises the question of whether additional measures are needed to improve safety at these locations. The current incidents highlight the urgency of implementing appropriate protective measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
