November 2024: A month of temperature contrasts and sunshine
November 2024 has proven to be an extraordinary month, characterized by unusual weather conditions that influenced different regions of Austria differently. In general, the temperature deviation in November was +0.1 degrees, which corresponds to the long -term average from 1991 to 2020 at the altitudes. But in the lowlands the month was noticeably cooler. In many regions, the rainfall remained far below the normal value, while the sun often seemed to be record -breaking.
In the first half of the month there was continued high pressure, which provided calm and sunny days. Fog and high fog were common, which made the weather very stable. There were hardly any significant rainfall. This inversion weather situation meant that the temperature deviations could vary greatly depending on the altitude. While the mountains recorded a temperature surplus of up to +2.5 degrees, it was noticeably colder in the valleys. Cities like Linz, Vienna and Graz had a deviation from -0.5 to -1 degrees compared to the average.
lack of precipitation in many regions
The consistently high air pressure values led to a considerable deficit of precipitation of around 70 percent all over Austria. Little rain was particularly popular in East Tyrol, Styria and in the Vienna area. While most places only experienced sporadic rainfall, fewer than one liter per square meter fell in some regions such as Seckau, Mattersburg and Wiener Neustadt. Only in the west, for example in Bregenz, the precipitation was relatively close to the monthly average. There was a short winter onset of 10 to 20 cm of snow around November 21st.
This record dryness is not new; The rainfall in November, especially in 2011 and 1920, were also extremely low. An analysis of the weather data shows that November 2024 remains far from a record in the rainfall.
unusually high sunshine duration
A striking aspect of the November weather was the significant increase in the duration of the sun. Compared to the 30-year fund, considerably more sunshine was recorded in the inner alpine room and in the east of Austria. In Vienna, for example, around 95 hours of sunshine were registered instead of the usual 70. This is also an indication of the clean air in the region, which typically leads to an improved view and less fog. In contrast, certain regions such as the central area of Upper Austria remained behind the average sunshine, where, for example, only 26 hours of sunshine were recorded in Kremsmünster and therefore did not reach half of the usual.
The temperature values were consistently different in the entire country. The warmest day was November 1, when 20 degrees were measured in Irnfritz (Lower Austria). As a result, however, there were night -rich nights, whereby in Völkermarkt on November 23-10.8 degrees was reached. Such low temperatures were last registered in 1975.
Here are some extreme values of the month:
- highest temperatures: 20.2 degrees in Irnfritz (November 1)
- deepest temperatures (<1500 m): -12.8 degrees in Weitensfeld (November 23)
- Places of precipitation: 117 liters per square meter in Alberschwende (v)
- dryest places: under one liter in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria)
- Sunday lived in places with the most hours of sunshine: 159 hours in Preitenegg (K)
- strongest wind peaks: 105 km/h on fire (V, November 21)
This November shows once again how different the weather events can be within Austria. The entire event makes it clear how strongly individual weather phenomena vary regionally and what challenge they represent for the local environment. Amazingly, the month in the mountains was not much colder than in the lowlands. This illustrates how dynamic and diverse the weather in our country can be. as reported .
