SPÖ triumphs in local council elections in 2025: A strong sign for Lower Austria!

The 2025 local council elections in Lower Austria produced a surprisingly strong result for the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). SPÖ NÖ regional manager Wolfgang Zwander expressed his joy about the development in a press conference, especially after the negative forecasts two years ago. Despite the ÖVP's dominance in rural areas, the SPÖ is showing clearer successes in urban centers such as Vienna. On site, Mayor Andreas Kollross proved with his 7.78 percent increase compared to 2020 that the SPÖ is pushing back onto the political stage, as well NOEN reports.

Successes and changes within the SPÖ

The information from SPÖ NÖ shows that 700,000 Lower Austrians live in communities run by the SPÖ. The increase in female mayors and the younger generation shows a clear realignment within the party. Of the 106 mayors represented by the SPÖ, 23 are women, and the youngest mayor, Peter Reitzner, is only 28 years old. “By depicting the entire spectrum of the population in the SPÖ-led municipalities, we show that we take people’s interests seriously,” explains Andreas Kollross and reports an increase of three women in leadership positions since 2020. The promotion of the regional economy is also emphasized, as municipalities play a crucial role as the largest public clients. OTS describes how important it is for communities to have solid financial resources in order to invest their way out of the recession.

Overall, the SPÖ has not only gained strength in the 2025 elections, but has also proven that it is a sustainable force in the communities. With over 3,000 local councilors, a third of whom are women, and a record number of leadership positions, the party shows its adaptability and the will to modern politics that actively involve citizens.
