Cow attack in Carinthia: vacationer and farmer seriously injured!

On Saturday evening, a family from Germany in Glödnitz, Carinthia, experienced a dramatic incident when it was attacked by a cow during a walk. The 40-year-old mother and her five-year-old daughter were injured around 8:15 p.m. when the cow jumped over a triple barbed wire fence and ran towards the vacationers. The animals were on a pasture that housed a total of six cows and a calf. After the attack, the holidaymakers called for help, which attracted the 64-year-old farmer who was nearby and was also injured. For the farmer, the injuries were serious and she had to be flown to the Klagenfurt Clinic with the RK1 rescue helicopter.

The two injured holidaymakers were brought to Elki Klagenfurt with an ambulance. The severity of the injuries of both the mother and the daughter was initially unclear. The incident not only raises questions about security when dealing with pasture animals, but also reminds of the challenges that result from the breeding and keeping of dairy cows.

security risks with pasture animals

The attack illustrates the potential dangers that grazing animals can go, especially in tourist regions. In many cases, responsibility for the behavior of cows is attributed to breeding methods. Current discussions of the agricultural experts, such as Martens, aim to achieve a departure from the performance focus in breeding. This could help to improve the well -being of the cows and at the same time increase security for people.

Jürgen Hartmann from the Rinder-Union West and his colleague Hartwig Meinikmann emphasize the importance of milk yield as a central breeding criterion. Nevertheless, recent breeding values show that aspects such as "useful life" and "health" gain in importance. In the past, it was mainly paid to milk performance and external appearance, but increasingly affect data on the reasons for the output of the cows.

Health of the cows in focus

The breeding of high -performance milk cows is often criticized, since responsibility for health risks is often attributed to breeding. The new relative breeding value overall (RZG), which has been in force since April 2021, takes into account the health of the animals 18%, while the milk yield is only 36%, which was previously 45%. This shows a slow but decisive change in the breeding approach.

In order to promote the health of the cows, it is necessary to carry out comprehensive data analyzes, since living conditions and the management of farmers have a decisive influence on the animals. However, some farmers underestimate the volume of illness in his stocks, which also complicated the situation.

The incidents in Carinthia clarify that dealing with pastures requires special attention. The improvement of breeding methods could not only increase the well -being of the cows, but also the security for people who live or visit in the vicinity of agricultural companies. The balance between animal welfare and agricultural requirements remains a central challenge in modern animal husbandry.
