Michaël Tschida wins the 17th Carinthian Poetry Prize in Klagenfurt

After recently winning the “17th Carinthian Poetry Prize from Stadtwerke Klagenfurt”, journalist Michael Tschida was overwhelmed. In a conversation with the writer Josef Winkler, Tschida admitted that his first steps into writing poems began many years ago and that he was able to develop his poetic talents anew through this competition. “First I take a blood pressure medication and then a little drink of joy,” he said humorously after the jury meeting in the “Sandwirth” hotel in Klagenfurt.

Tschida, born in Villach in 1963, is not only known as a poet; He is also the founder of the successful subscription series “ORFEO”, which was the first in the world dedicated exclusively to vocal music. His impressive commitment to art has now been recognized with a prize of 5,000 euros, a certificate and a glass trophy from the HTL Ferlach. Tschida showed interest in poetry at an early age when he published his first volume of poetry at the age of 20.

Awards for young talents

Second place in the competition went to Verena Schumanski, a Carinthian living in Vienna, who also received 1,500 euros in prize money as an actress and English trainer. Schumanski, who was awarded the Carinthia state's main prize for prose in 2020, added to the list of up-and-coming poets in the region. Third place went to Stefan Feinig, a multi-award-winning author from Feistritz who writes his works in both German and Slovenian.

Among the other winners was Barbara Pachler from Klagenfurt, who was awarded the PosterService GmbH prize. She has an impressive list of publications and awards. The literary scholar Dominik Srienc, a prize-winning author, was also honored with the PEN Club Austria prize, while Katharina Kaufmann from Ebenthal received the Carinthian Drava publishing house prize. Recognition awards went to several talented writers, including John Patrick Platzer from Klagenfurt and the musician Lena Kolter.

Culture Prize for Andrea Drumbl

Another highlight of the event was the awarding of the Carinthian State Culture Prize, worth 3,000 euros, to Andrea Drumbl, who grew up in Kötschach-Mauthen and has already been honored several times for her literary work. In addition, the 1,500 euro prize from the state capital of Klagenfurt was awarded to Manuela Tomic, who was recognized for her diverse cultural contributions, especially her radio plays.

With overall impressive entries and diverse talent, this competition strengthens the literary landscape in Carinthia and encourages new generations of writers to raise their voices. Further information about the award winners and their works is available can be found here.
