Modernization of the train stations: Villach and Arnoldstein will be fit for the future

In an important development project, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are working on the redesign of various train stations, with a special focus on accessibility. After four years of hard work, the train station in Arnoldstein is about to make these important changes. The main train station in Villach is also modernized with regard to the upcoming Koralbahn.

Arnoldstein is considered one of the largest train stations in Carinthia, with an impressive number of 16 tracks, which were once particularly important for freight traffic. Today, however, the train station plays a central role in passenger transport, in particular towards Gailtal and partly to Italy. It also serves as an important parking space for freight trains.

barrier -free access for all

An outstanding feature of the renovation is the creation of a barrier -free access to the platforms and trains, which will be available from the end of October 2024. This means an end of the old, steep stairs that were an obstacle for many passengers. ÖBB project manager Christiane Schiavinato said that two newly installed elevators are put into operation that enable passengers to get to the island platform from the edge platform.

In order to implement the necessary changes, the ÖBB invests an impressive 70 million euros. Former handling buildings were partially dismantled to create new parking spaces for bicycles and cars. In addition to the new parking facilities, the train station will also be remotely controlled from the end of 2025 from Villach, an innovation that will affect numerous people. Schiavinato adds: "The last work is running and the electronic signal box is integrated into the operating tour center in Villach."

extensions and sustainability in view

Another aspect of the project is to increase the capacity at Villach station. There, the four platforms are extended to more than 400 meters to make room for the longer trains of the Koralbahn. Project coordinator Thomas Herzeg explains the goals of this project and emphasizes the need to adapt the infrastructures to future requirements.

In addition to the modernization of the platforms, sustainability is also being worked on. Photovoltaic systems are installed on the roofs of the platforms, which are intended to cover the electricity requirements of the company. In addition to the expansion of the bicycle parking spaces, the access in the east and west will soon be accessible to passengers. Noise protection walls were built in the east to offer residents more calm. The construction period will also extend over the next three years according to the planning.

The implementation of these projects shows the clear focus of the ÖBB on the needs of passengers and the necessary adjustments to modern mobility. For a detailed view of the case, see the report on kaernten.orf .
