Storm warning: hurricane gusts and rain threaten seven federal states!

Today, April 17, 2025, the Austrian Severe Weather Center declared the orange warning level in seven federal states due to strong gusts of wind. The federal states of Tyrol, Salzburg, Vienna, Burgenland, Styria, Upper Austria and Lower Austria are affected. While there is a yellow warning in Carinthia, significant caution is advised for the other federal states.

The orange warning level signals strong wind conditions that can become stormy at exposed altitudes. The situation becomes particularly dangerous in road traffic and near forest areas, where falling trees can pose a serious threat. A low pressure area will move from the western Mediterranean region northeastwards towards Italy on Maundy Thursday, which will lead to rainfall in the western and southern regions of Austria.

Weather conditions and temperatures

In eastern Austria, from Upper Austria to Burgenland, people can experience occasional sunshine, even if the atmosphere is slightly clouded by Saharan dust. At the same time, cloud fields dominate in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Carinthia and parts of Styria, and rain sets in towards the end of the day. From later in the afternoon, the risk of thunderstorms increases along the western Northern Alps and in the southeast.

The wind blows predominantly from the southeast and can develop considerable strength regionally. However, the foehn will weaken noticeably, especially in the western areas. Temperatures in the affected regions fluctuate between 12 and 25 degrees Celsius. Unstable weather with persistent rain is expected on Good Friday - this will move from Vorarlberg across Upper Austria to Upper Carinthia.

Impact during the holidays

At altitudes of around 1200 to 1500 meters, precipitation can sometimes turn into snowfall. The weather will also be changeable in the eastern half of the country, although some periods of sunshine can be expected here too. During the holidays the weather remains unsettled with regional differences in sunshine, rainfall or snow.
