Young racer with 201 km/h on the A2: driver's license and car away!

Südautobahn bei Traiskirchen, Niederösterreich, Österreich - On May 20, 2025, a 19-year-old man from the Baden district on the south motorway near Traiskirchen in Lower Austria was traveling at a speed of 201 km/h. It thus significantly exceeded the permitted maximum speed of 130 km/h. According to 5min.at, the vehicle was stopped around 9:20 p.m. when the driver drove on the highway at an average speed of 201 km/h. During the check, it turned out that the driver was also 174 km/h at a speed limit of 100 km/h and 163 km/h at 80 km/h.

As a result of this extreme speed crossing, his vehicle was temporarily confiscated and the driver's license was removed immediately. In addition, an advertisement was submitted to the responsible district administrative authority.

stricter handling of racers

With the introduction of a three-stage system by the 34th StVO amendment, which took effect on March 1, 2025, the measures against racers in Austria were significantly tightened. According to Austria.gv.at, vehicles can now be confiscated and auctioned with extreme lawn. The police are authorized to temporarily confiscate vehicles if the top speed in the local area is more than 60 km/h and outside the local area by more than 70 km/h.

If there is a license withdrawal due to frenzy or ruthless behavior within two years, the district authority can even declare the vehicle confiscated if the above -mentioned speed overruns are determined. If the vehicle does not belong to the handlebar, a ban on steering can still be issued. The confiscated vehicle can ultimately be declared and auctioned in order to counteract further violations.

fatal accidents due to excessive speed

The problem of speed is serious. According to [kfv.at] (https://www.kfv.at/strengere-massungen- against-raser/)), the main cause of around a quarter of all fatal accidents is not adapted. In particular, unprotected road users are extremely at risk at excessive speed. Statistics show that a third of the fatal accidents were due to driving too fast in 2020.

In order to counteract this problem, among other things, the sanctions have been tightened against racers since September 1, 2021 by increasing the minimum and maximum penalty for speed overruns and the withdrawal periods for the driver's license have been extended. In the case of speed over 80 km/h, driving license withdrawal threatens at least six months. In addition, behavior in road traffic is required that takes into account the life and security of all road users.

The current incidents show that the strict measures are essential to take responsibility and to raise awareness of the dangers of speed overrun.
