In the spring of 2024, the body of a 31-year-old man named Alexandru O. was discovered in Sankt Pölten. The restaurant specialist had been missing for several weeks after allegedly going out to get cigarettes. However, the striking site of the discovery, a 1.20 meter deep hole in the ground on the banks of the Mühlbach, leaves many questions unanswered. Alexandru O. was found wearing shorts, socks and a pulled-up T-shirt, lying in a small hollow, facing the wooden plank.
The medical examiner's office found that Alexandru O. had traces of banned substances in potentially life-threatening quantities in his body. Nevertheless, the official cause of death was given as drowning in the bottom water of the pit. It remains unclear when and under what circumstances he died, especially since a large puncture mark was found on the back of his left hand and Alexandru was known to be left-handed. Initially, the public prosecutor's office found no signs of a crime, which is why the murder investigation was closed in December 2024.
New investigative approach
The deceased's mother, Nikoleta O., spoke about her son's living conditions before his death, who had apparently become stable despite previous drug problems. He had completed his training and was looking for work. After the ultimatum, she received information about a possible murder of Alexandru. While analyzing his damaged cell phone, she found strange recordings with unclear voices and noises.
The drug problem in Austria
The discussion about Alexandru O.'s death falls into the broader context of the drug problem in Austria. The annual report on the drug situation, commissioned by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction and the Ministry of Health, has been highlighting the challenges in dealing with illegal drugs for years. Christian Mader, the head of the “Austria Finds You” association, recognizes parallels to other cases in which deaths in the drug environment are often quickly classified as accidents. The continued withdrawals of small amounts from Alexandru's online accounts, which have not been followed up by authorities, increase suspicions of crime and his family's hopes for a closer investigation.
