Shrimp on the rise: Austria's new favorite on the table!
Seafood is becoming increasingly popular in Austria. Shrimp in particular is seen as a trend food. According to a recent survey by TQS commissioned by Yuu’n Mee, which surveyed 1,000 Austrians, an impressive 87% of respondents say they love seafood; Mussels and shrimps are also very popular. A notable aspect is that 74% of the population appreciates the taste of mussels and shrimps. The preference for shrimp is particularly pronounced: 93% of participants describe it as their favorite seafood, and 56% prefer shrimp to other species.
These preferences are also reflected in eating habits. Over half of those surveyed (47%) consider shrimp to be an emerging trend food. Additionally, more than 50% of participants consume shrimp at least once a month, and 21% eat them more often than they did a few years ago. Shrimp is preferred to be eaten in a restaurant (39%), at home (39%) or during vacation (18%). These types of preparation show that shrimp is not only perceived as a healthy option, but also as an enjoyable one.
Sustainability and manufacturing diversity
Another important aspect is the combination of enjoyment and sustainability. 79% of respondents value sustainable products when purchasing seafood. Particularly noteworthy is the naturalness of the products, which is crucial for 87% of buyers. You want as few additives, E numbers or water-binding substances as possible. In this context, Yuu’n Mee, an Austrian company that has existed since 2005, comes into play. It specializes in sustainable seafood and works closely with partner farms in Vietnam to promote responsible aquaculture.
The company is also actively involved in projects to reforest mangrove forests and cooperates with WWF Austria. These initiatives are in line with future nutritional trends, which also emphasize the importance of fish and seafood. According to the Nutrition 2025 trend report from the Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE), flexitarianism is considered the leading nutritional trend with 82% approval, combining a plant-based diet with fish products. These trends show that the demand for sustainable, healthy and diverse nutritional options continues to increase.
The health factor of seafood
Experts from science and practice emphasize the positive effects of seafood. Fish products contain valuable nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and high-quality protein, which are important for a healthy diet. In addition, these foods support individual diets that are increasingly coming to the fore, such as gut-friendly (59% agreement) and blood sugar-friendly (51% agreement) diets. In times when simple, healthy preparation options are in demand, seafood makes a valuable contribution to everyday nutrition.
Overall, it shows that shrimp and other seafood not only taste great, but also play an important role in a sustainable and healthy diet. With a growing number of consumers interested in quality and sustainable origins, Yuu’n Mee is in step with the times and is expected to continue to grow in importance.
