Ironing onset of winter: Tehran under 30 cm of snow - schools closed!
Teheran, Iran - A violent winter storm caused chaos in Iran on Sunday, February 8, 2025. According to the state news agency IRNA, all schools and government offices were closed to react to the extreme weather conditions. This measure was considered necessary in view of a dramatic increase in energy consumption. The rapid fall of temperature and the massive snowfall led to remarkable lessons for the students, which is remarkable on a Sunday - a regular working day in Iran.
amounts of snow and falling temperature
In the capital Tehran, up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow were reported on Sunday, while the adjacent province of Gilan, only about 130 kilometers north of the capital, had to struggle with up to 220 centimeters of fresh snow. This combination of strong snowfall and sudden cold slump was a surprise for many people, since snow is expected in February, but the intensity is rather unusual. The freezing temperatures have led to massive weather problems, especially in northern Iran, such as Yahoo Nachrichten.
The continuous cold and the massive amounts of snow have heavily used the local infrastructure. Outside of Tehran, the streets have become potentially impassable through the snow masses, which is why the decision to close schools and authorities was considered urgent and necessary. The effects on the everyday life of citizens are noticeable, as the sudden weather changes in many regions have led to power outages and other supply bottlenecks, as already mentioned. This winter storm once again shows the vulnerability of the country compared to extreme weather conditions.
