Breast Cancer Month: Raising awareness with pink ribbon campaigns in Burgenland

The month of October is dedicated worldwide to the topic of breast cancer. During this special period, attention is drawn to the challenges that those affected experience on a daily basis. This includes the important role of early detection, the development of new treatments and the need to raise awareness among the population.

A key focus during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is raising awareness about having regular mammograms. These imaging tests are crucial because they help detect breast cancer at an early stage. Statistics show that around 6,000 women will be newly ill in Austria in 2022. Unfortunately, around 1,600 of these women have died as a result of the disease, underlining the urgency of the awareness campaigns.

In Burgenland, the topic is made visible through impressive wooden displays in the shape of the pink ribbon, which were made by the “Save the Child” support workshop. These installations are located in 149 communities, in front of every district headquarters and in the country house. The state governor's deputy Astrid Eisenkopf (SPÖ), who acts as an ambassador for the Pink Ribbon campaign, is using this platform to raise broader awareness of breast cancer.

There are two special breast health centers in Burgenland, which are located in the Güssing clinic and the hospital in Eisenstadt. These facilities play a key role in the effort to improve early detection and treatment of breast cancer. They offer great support for women who have questions about breast health and need advice.

It is important that women are encouraged to attend their regular check-ups. The challenges posed by the disease can be mitigated through education and support. Breast cancer affects not only the women themselves, but also their relatives, friends and the entire social environment. Actions during Breast Cancer Month lay the foundation for a broader discussion about the needs and challenges of those affected.

By carrying out this commitment, the initiators not only want to provide information, but also strengthen emotional and social support for women living with this diagnosis. At a time when health is a key issue for many, October is a true focus month that offers hope and support.
