Teenagers and Likes: How social media influences the psyche!
Teens are particularly vulnerable to the reactions to their social media posts - and that has dramatic effects! New research shows that teenagers respond to likes on social networks much more emotionally than adults. This study, led by psychologist Ana da Silva Pinho from the University of Amsterdam, examined the Instagram activity of almost 15,000 users to find out how much likes influence their behavior and mood.
The results are shocking: While adults remain more stable and resilient, teenagers quickly fall into emotional depression when there is a lack of approval. The scientists evaluated over 1.7 million Instagram entries and researched the posting behavior of 13 to 19 year olds, which depends heavily on the amount of likes. More likes mean more publications, while fewer likes mean they withdraw. “Likes” can really shake up young people’s daily attitude to life!
Looking for stability
The scientists also found that increased sensitivity to social validation is linked to changes in certain areas of the brain, such as the amygdala. This region controls emotional processing. These findings provide insights into the dangers posed by likes and reinforce the need to address the problem. The psychologists even call for the hiding of likes, a function that Instagram introduced in 2021 to reduce the pressure on young people.
Nevertheless, experts warn against underestimating the power of likes. The pressure to define oneself through social media may continue, even if likes are hidden. The researchers note that existing platforms urgently need to be reformed to shift the focus from likes to more meaningful engagement methods. Because even if likes are dangerous, the appeal of social media remains irresistible!
