Virus outbreak in northern China: hospitals at their limits due to HMPV!
The human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is spreading at an alarming rate in northern China. This respiratory virus, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, poses a significant threat, particularly to children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Videos circulating on social media show overcrowded hospitals and long queues, adding to fears of a new health crisis, as well VOL.AT reports. Despite concerns about the high infection rate, authorities assure that the situation is under control. “The cases are less serious and less widespread than last year,” said Mao Ning, foreign ministry spokeswoman, offering an optimistic outlook.
HMPV causes symptoms similar to a cold or flu, but in severe cases it can lead to bronchitis and pneumonia. In recent years it has been shown that the virus is particularly active in the winter months, when respiratory infections are at their peak. However, there are currently neither vaccines nor specific antiviral drugs against HMPV, which complicates the situation. Experts such as Prof. Paul Griffin from Mater Health Services emphasize the importance of taking basic precautions to limit the spread.
Invisible threats from an ancient enemy
HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and is recognized as one of the main causes of acute respiratory diseases. Information from research shows that the viral infection in young children under two years of age may be a risk factor for the development of asthma later in life. The frequency of HMPV infections is comparable to that of influenza, and about 10–12% of respiratory illnesses in children are associated with it, making this virus one of the most common reasons for hospitalizations in young children, such as the NCBI PMC platform determines.
