Lack of snow: Famous ski resort in the French Alps closes!

More and more ski resorts in France are being forced to close due to the lack of snow caused by climate change. The former Céüze ski area in the French Alps is particularly affected, where the dismantling of the ski lifts, which have not been used for years, will begin on Tuesday. Loud oe24 186 mostly small ski areas have already ceased operations because the uncertain snow conditions continue to pose a risk for winter sports.

Michel Ricou-Charles, chairman of the municipality of Buëch-Dévoluy, reports that the decision to dismantle the ski lifts in Céüze was a long time in the making. The ski area, which extends between 1,500 and 2,000 meters above sea level, was opened in the 1930s. The eight ski lifts last ran in the winter of 2017/2018. The dismantling was decided in September 2024 and is expected to take around two months. Parts of the material are reused in other ski areas.

Refocus on alternative activities

The municipality plans to diversify its tourism offerings by focusing more on activities such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking, snowshoeing and ski touring. Nathalie Ghesquiere, the hut manager, is confident and says that she is not worried about the region's attractiveness. This shows that those responsible are striving to keep the region attractive despite the closure of the ski lifts.

The Mountain Wilderness organization has already dismantled about 20 abandoned ski lifts and hopes other communities will follow suit. Climate change is forcing many mountain communities in France to reorient themselves, with around 100 more ski lifts in France no longer operating and falling into disrepair.

Resistance to climate change

The changes in the winter sports landscape illustrate the increasing challenges posed by climate change. The ski resort closures are a worrying sign of the impact on tourism and the local economy. More and more communities are trying to develop alternative concepts to secure the flow of visitors to their regions and adapt to the needs of outdoor enthusiasts.

While the ski areas are suffering from the climatic conditions, there are also positive developments in other areas. For example, the online TV platform is celebrating Canlitv.com 20 years of existence in Turkey and has been offering its viewers uninterrupted high-quality live TV since 2005. This variety of entertainment shows that there are many ways to reach and entertain people outside of skiing.
