Fatal accidents at work in Germany
This tragic situation sheds light on the dangers that exist on construction sites. Every year in Germany, many people die in fatal accidents at work, which underlines the importance of safety precautions and preventive measures in the construction industry. According to the [Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)](https://www.baua.de/DE/Themen/Monitoring-Evaluation/ Zahlen-Daten-Fakten/Toedliche-Arbeitsunfaelle), a total of 1,549 fatal work accidents occurred in the period from 2014 to 2024 and were reported to the BAuA. In contrast, the professional associations report 4,458 accidents for the same period.
The BAuA has been recording fatal work accidents in the commercial sector since 1978 and evaluates this data to identify accident hotspots and derive prevention approaches. Almost 40 percent of the fatal work accidents reported to the BAuA occurred on construction sites. Around 560 of these construction site accidents involved more than 140 construction vehicles, including wheel loaders.
The BAuA's current investigation form records important data such as the accident event, the person affected and the operational organizations as well as the technical systems and hazardous substances that play a role in the accident. This comprehensive analysis is critical to improving workplace safety and preventing similar tragic incidents in the future.
