Bird food from Lauenburg: How to feed correctly and sustainably!

Lauenburg. In an impressive family business that produces wildlife food, bags containing 25 kilograms of sunflower seeds and various bird food mixtures are stacked up. Achim Erdtmann, the managing director, reports with a smile about the high demand for these large packs, which are primarily purchased by private individuals. From fat balls to food holders – the range is huge and is produced in Lauenburg before being sold across Europe.

The bestsellers are undoubtedly the suet balls and sunflower seeds, which Erdtmann recommends to every bird lover. For beginners, there are practical sets that contain different types of food and are even prepared for children, including a book and a memory game. Most of the ingredients come from the region and are mixed and packaged on site, then distributed to supermarkets and via platforms such as Amazon.

The right choice of food and feed dispenser

But there are a few things to consider when feeding the birds! Hygiene is particularly important: feeders should be designed in such a way that the birds do not walk around in the food and contaminate it. Netless fat balls are an excellent alternative to classic plastic nets. Sunflower seeds are considered the basic food par excellence - they attract many species and ensure that the birds stay at the feeders for longer. For soft food eaters such as robins and blackbirds, Nabu recommends offering raisins and fruit close to the ground, making sure that the food remains fresh.

Feeding the birds is important not only in winter, but also in summer, where low-energy feed and vitamin-rich mixtures are offered to help the animals overcome the challenges of urbanization. A nature experience that is particularly valuable for children and young people as they can observe their feathered friends up close!
