In a significant step, the municipality of Cremlingen decided to abolish the controversial road construction contributions. During the last meeting of the municipal council on September 24, the termination decision was made, as the center group (an alliance of the CDU, FDP and Heie) announced in a press release. This decision follows the pouring vote of the citizens, whose majority of 82.62 percent voted for the immediate abolition of the contributions.

Tobias Breske, the chairman of the middle group, was pleased with the clear signal of the citizens: "This clear vote confirmed our basic conviction to abolish the unjust road construction contributions." With this tailwind, it was possible to move the majority of the council from the SPD and the Greens to take over this measure. Breske hopes that the topic will finally be concluded with the council decision.

unexpected tax increase

The joy of the abolition of the contributions is, however, clouded by the simultaneous announcement of a tax increase in property tax. This increases by 75 points, which means that property owners have to expect additional costs of six to eight euros per month. In his passionate speech, Hermann Büsing from the Mitte emphasized the need to compensate for the eliminating income in other ways without again burdening the taxpayers. "Let us decide to save the citizens before we continue to burden the citizens," said Büsing, while he called several savings potential in the household.

The majority of the SPD and the Greens had decided to coordinate the topics of road construction contributions and tax increase. An application from the middle for a separate vote was rejected. Breske commented: "Others may evaluate this behavior." In the speeches, the group pointed out that tax increases should serve as the final means in order to compensate for loss of income. Financial Committee Chairman Simone Schidlowski urged that all political groups should think together where savings are possible in the household. "The results could then have been decided in peace in the form of a supplementary budget," she emphasized.

The developments related to the abolition of road construction contributions and the associated tax increase have led to intensive discussions in the municipality of Cremlingen. While the decision to cancel the contributions is positively accepted by the citizens, the tactics of the council to combine the topics remains controversial. In the upcoming meeting in December, the topic of supplementary budget will continue to be on the agenda, which promises additional discussions.
