Let's honor our heroes: the day of the veterans on November 11th!

Cementerio Nacional de Arlington, Arlington, Virginia, EE.UU. - The veteran day in the USA, a venerable holiday, is celebrated on November 11th and is reminiscent of the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces. This day falls on the anniversary of the end of the First World War, which ended on November 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. with the entry into force of the ceasefire. A day that stands not only for grief, but also for gratitude!

The numbers are impressive: around 19.5 million veterans live in the United States, including around 2 million women. Of these veterans, more than 5 million receives compensation for disabilities. These statistics illustrate the immense number of people who fought for their country and whose victims must not be forgotten.

A look at the story

The origins of this holiday go back to 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistic Day. A year later, the first unknown soldier in the Arlington National Cemetery was buried, a gesture of respect and memory. The Armistic Day was declared a nationwide holiday in 1938. But it was not until 1954, under President Dwight Eisenhower, the day was renamed Veteran Day to commemorate all veterans.

The history of the veteran day is shaped by changes: in 1968 the holiday was postponed to the fourth Monday in October to enable the federal employees for a long weekend. But in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned to the Veteran Day to November 11, where he remains to this day. A day that brings the nation together to commemorate the hero who fought for freedom!
