Massive arrests: Police dismantle fraud network in Lower Saxony!
Osnabrück/Emden (ots)
A dramatic blow against a brazen gang of fraudsters: The Osnabrück police have mobilized over 50 police officers in the fight against the fraud of the “fake police officers” and carried out several arrests in East Frisia. On October 23, 2024, the handcuffs clicked – but this time with real law enforcement officers! A 27-year-old man was arrested in Emden, while the search for a second suspect, a 25-year-old, remains in full swing. Another perpetrator tried to escape by jumping out of the window, but was caught.
This gang is suspected of being responsible for at least 11 crimes in Lower Saxony, with a total amount of around 180,000 euros in their sights. Among the frightening incidents is the case of an over 85-year-old woman from Moormerland who left jewelry worth 100,000 euros on her doorstep - a clear trick used by fraudsters. In another shocking incident, an 84-year-old was asked to leave cash and valuables worth €2,000 outside the door “for her safety”. The brazen perpetrators appear to have developed a perfidious system to deceive unsuspecting seniors.
Detailed investigations and searches
Today's searches revealed a large amount of evidence: more than 4,000 euros in cash, jewelry and dangerous weapons such as brass knuckles and a pistol were seized. Over 50 officers and special operations teams were involved in carrying out five apartment searches in Südbrookmerland and Emden. The police have uncovered a network that was active throughout Lower Saxony, and investigations are continuing to find out whether further crimes can be attributed.
The “fake police officers” scam is devastating: callers pretend to be real police officers and often pressure their victims for hours to hand over money and valuables. The psychological consequences for the affected older people are often profound, with many suffering from anxiety after such an incident. It is hoped that these arrests will bring about a turning point in the fight against these unscrupulous fraudsters.
