Summer of the century 2025: Austria is preparing for a heat wave!

Weather forecasts for the summer of 2025 in Central Europe have changed significantly. How Cosmo reported, it was originally expected that the summer would start off cool and rainy. However, the latest calculations from NOAA's CFS model show that a dry and warm start to summer is ahead. This scenario is supported by the European ECMWF model, which had already pointed to a warm start to summer.

Top meteorologist Dominik Jung is confident about the updated forecasts, which are seen as a sign of one of the warmest summers in Austria and Europe. Meteorologist Jan Schenk even predicts a “summer of the century”. Austria has warmed twice as fast as the global average since the beginning of the 20th century, and the average annual temperature has risen by more than 2 degrees.

Effects of climate change

The consequences of this warming are already being felt. Dramatic retreats of glaciers in the Alps, such as the Pasterze and the Gepatschferner, show the acute threat to the Alpine landscapes. Winter tourism at medium altitudes will also be affected due to shortened snow seasons. How Federal Environment Agency clarifies, climate change not only influences temperatures, but also leads to a changed water balance in Austria. This is reflected in increasing dry periods, particularly in the east of the country.

More frequent heavy rain events also cause floods and mudslides, which pose considerable risks for the population and the infrastructure. Agriculture is also facing unexpected challenges as growing seasons change, new pests spread and the risk of frequent crop failures increases.

Health and economic consequences

The health risks should also not be underestimated. The number of heat deaths during heat waves, especially in urban areas, is increasing. New disease vectors, such as ticks and tiger mosquitoes, are also emerging as a result of climate change. Loud WWF The increase in extreme weather events and the rise in sea levels are pessimistic harbingers for the coming years and decades. Human activities are the main cause of climate change, and this has drastic consequences for ecosystems and people worldwide.

In Germany, for example, the flood disaster in July 2021 showed how devastating such extreme weather events can be. There, over 90 liters of rain per square meter led to catastrophic flooding, which cost the lives of over 180 people. The increase in such events can also be observed in Central Europe and it is expected that future extreme weather events will occur even more frequently.

In order to combat climate change more effectively and limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius, immediate action is necessary. Examining emission reductions in all sectors and expanding renewable energies are essential to avert the impending dangers. The technology and knowledge to make these changes exist – the time to act is now.
