In a moving drama about the reverberating consequences of the corona pandemic, well-known doctor and entertainer Eckart von Hirschhausen speaks in his latest documentary “Hirschhausen and the Long Shadow of Corona” about the invisible struggles that many people continue to have to fight. On Monday, November 18th, 2024, the documentary will be broadcast on Erste at 8:15 p.m. and will be available in the ARD media library on November 16th. Here, von Hirschhausen gives a voice to patients affected by Long Covid and ME/CFS - conditions that are triggered by viral infections and cause extremely stressful symptoms.
One of the protagonists, Andrea, describes her journey from an active life as a physiotherapist who used to climb mountains to a person who now mainly lies in bed. Her story is exemplary for hundreds of thousands of sufferers whose high burden of illness is often ignored by society. “The majority prefer to look away,” says von Hirschhausen, pointing out that the health system does not meet the needs of these people – without diagnosis and therapy, they are often left helpless.
The burdened souls of youth
But it's not just adults who are bearing the burden of the pandemic. Children and young people have suffered enormously from the protective measures, both psychologically and socially. Psychological pressure has increased sharply since the start of the pandemic, leading to a crisis in the children and youth sector. Von Hirschhausen discusses with child and adolescent psychiatrist Prof. Tobias Renner the serious effects on younger generations that are often overlooked.
“Precisely because I have clearly spoken out in favor of the benefits of vaccination, I think it is important to also talk about new findings,” adds von Hirschhausen, while discussing the negative experiences of people who became ill after a corona vaccination. At a benefit evening for post-vac sufferers, he heard reports from a cabaret artist who talked about her own experiences.
Hopeful future
Von Hirschhausen closes his film with a strong appeal: more resources and better networking in the healthcare system are necessary to meet the challenges of Long Covid, Post Vac and ME/CFS. His message to all those who are working tirelessly to improve the situation is imbued with hope and determination. “Thank you to everyone who keeps this hope high every day and gives their best,” he concludes. “Hirschhausen and the Long Shadow of Corona” is a powerful testimony to the ongoing difficulties in the post-pandemic world that should make everyone think.
