Danger of flooding in Hesse: Lahn overflows its banks, water levels rise dramatically!
The weather situation in Giessen and the surrounding regions has led to a worrying flood situation in recent days. Heavy rain and snowfall have caused water levels on the Lahn to rise significantly. According to a report by Giessen General the weather situation at the beginning of the year is classified as dangerous. Reporting levels for floods have already been reached in many areas, and there is a heightened state of alert in the area around Marburg and Gießen, as the cross-state flood portal (LHP) informs.
Reporting level 1 was exceeded at the Gießen-Klärwerk water gauge, while the water level in Leun has also reached reporting level 2. The water level of the Lahn in Gießen has overflowed its banks and it is expected that the Gießen sewage treatment plant reporting level will be reached during the morning. In contrast to last year, when the highest water level was measured since 2011, according to the LHP, no such extreme events are to be feared in the near future. In addition, the water levels on the Fulda and other bodies of water in Hesse are reporting a decline.
Current level readings
The exact level measurements show a critical situation: at the Marburg gauge, the current level is 342, which is 88% above the average. In Leun the number is 546, 160% above the average. Significant excesses are also recorded at other water gauge points such as Diez, Kalkofen and Lahnstein, with current measured values up to 192% above the average. All values are from an update of WeatherOnline.
