Container accommodations in the Fulda district: big gaps despite need!

The Situation of refugee accommodation in the Fulda district remains tense: Up to 59 refugees will be planned in the new container accommodation in Wiesenweg in Großenlüder from March 25, 2024. This measure is part of a comprehensive plan that every municipality in the district has to provide accommodation for three percent of its population. Grossenlüder has therefore sought a total of 260 placements for refugees, as Mayor Florian Fritzsch reports. Currently 31 people are already living in the facility.

The container system was equipped with modern sanitary facilities and a kitchenette and, according to the municipality, fulfills all the necessary location criteria, which include the proximity to water and power connections as well as the accessibility of local public transport. So far, 133 refugees, mostly from Ukraine, have been accommodated in Grossenlüder, whereby there is also space for seven people in rented apartments, according to the mayor report. Overall, the city could accommodate around 194 refugees.

The refugee number in the district of Fulda

In the entire region, the state of Hesse provides the districts of refugees who have been controlled due to changes in asylum law since May 2024. In 1967, refugees are currently housed in 38 shared accommodation in the Fulda district. The occupancy of the container villages fluctuates between 30 and 80 percent, while the latest facility in Wiesenweg is already planned. The city of Fulda, which is responsible for assigning the new refugees, must react quickly to volatile demand. Mayor Heiko Stolz von Neuhof explained that the allocations depend heavily on the developments at state and federal level, which is why a reliable forecast of migration is difficult, as reported by the fuldaer Zeitung .

The accommodation situation hardly becomes easier because the facilities are not fully utilized, but the number of allocations in the coming weeks could probably increase. The container villages in Fulda, Neuhof and other municipalities have therefore become more important. Mayor Fritzsch indicates a "tense situation" and announces that the community will continuously observe the developments. Currently, far fewer people live in the container systems than their maximum capacity - a fact that can change at any time due to the global crises, which is reminiscent of the refugee movements in recent years than was looking for protection in a very short time, as in the shortest possible time, such as from osthessen news reports.
