Elbe tunnel blocking: This is how you come across the Elbe despite the renovation!

Elbe tunnel blocking: This is how you come across the Elbe despite the renovation!

Hamburg. From Monday, the old Elbe tunnel will become ghost road for almost three weeks! Refurbishment work is due and the popular connection from St. Pauli to the port becomes impassable for pedestrians and cyclists. The reason? A new road surface in the western tube that releases harmful vapors. The port authority HPA has announced the full closure by December 6th, 8pm.

Every day, almost 3000 visitors and 1000 bicycles use this historic tunnel. But now it says: take detours! If you want to via the Elbe to Steinwerder and further to Wilhelmsburg, you can either use the Elbbrücken or switch to the Hadag ferries. Line 73 runs every 20 to 40 minutes from the Landungsbrücken via the theater in the harbor to the Ernst-August-Schleuse. Line 75, on the other hand, connects the landing bridges directly with Steinwerder every 15 minutes.

hadag reacts with replacement traffic

In order to minimize the restrictions for cyclists, Hadag has set up replacement traffic for the two weekends affected. On 23, 24, 30, 30 and December 1, line 75 will run every hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. But be careful: if you miss the last ferry, you have to wait until the next morning or accept the detour via the Elbbrücken. This is signposted in the areas of Hermann-Blohm-Straße, Reiherdamm and Klütjenfelder Straße.

The old Elbe tunnel, an architectural landmark since 1911, has been in the renovation in the western tube since 2019. After the reopening on St. Nicholas Day, there will still be asphalting work, but these are harmless to health, the HPA assures. The eastern tube remains closed to vehicle traffic until further notice. A historical place that is now a challenge for a short period of time!
